Did a little road cruising last night. Went to
one place - nothin. Went to another place- nothin. It wasn't until I was heading home down a fairly well traveled highway that I spotted this mojave. Also saw a kingsnake dor some sort of rattler - very dor and a gopher dor on the same road. I have yet to find a live king. ![]() ![]() |

I reiterate, MoHave is the county in AZ. MoJave is the Rattler and the desert. ![]()

Congrats on your Scute, Dan. I use the word "Scute" so Señor Jerry doesn't yell at me.

So, since we're on the topic (sort of) how is "scute" pronounced?
scoot as in boot or scute as in but or perhaps scute as in cute ??? |

the PARC website goes along with SSAR's HC#29 but in this case, they do not. I have talked to Tom Brennan about this and probably will once again. In HC#29, Crotalus scutulatus is listed as theMOJAVE Rattlesnake and C. s. scutulatus, our local ssp., is listed as the MOJAVE GREEN RATTLESNAKE, even though not nearly all are green and colors range from tan to brown to pink.
And, I have always heard "scute" pronounced "scoot," obviously from the pronunciation of the specific epithet, scutulatus. (See "Composition of Scientific Words," Brown, R. W., Smithsonian Institution Press, ISBN 0-87474-286-2, 1954 [latest edition - 1985].
