Default Gopher Snake?

I caught this animal Tuesday night while out on back roads NE of Apache Junction. It is approx. 4 feet long. I'm told it is a Gopher Snake...can someone tell me if that is true? Also, the snake's pattern & color changes markedly in the last 18 inches or so near the tail...is that an unusual pattern/color or normal for this type?

Thank you for assistance.

Thank you. Is the coloring/pattern on the back 18-20 inches normal for this species?

Arrow That is a>>>

Normal Sonoran Gopher Snake and the pattern toward the tail is normal. Notice the examples in the pictures:

that species of snake rolls into a loop or "wheel" and chases people while stabbing them in the butt with its tail.

Don't listen to these crazy kids.

That's a bona fide Sonoran Gopher Snake you got there. The pattern and coloring is very common for this species, although I'd say that's a really pretty specimen.

Exclamation Pay no attention>>>

to the Snake Monkey. He is just jealous that he can't find a Gopher Snake. And, they are not at all venomous!! They are constrictors.

LOL...thank you for all the information. This one may be related to my Leucistic Rat Snake, as they both buzz their tails when cranky...darn cross-breeders .

I think the most interesting thing about gopher snakes is the ability to quickly discard the rattle and fangs when they sense a AHA volunteer is near.
