Angry

So i went over to New River Rd. tonight and finally saw one. I pulled over and then turned around. I saw two cars coming so I stayed still and the first one drove over it without hitting it. The second car came and I had my lights on the snake that was in the CENTER of the road. I noticed the car moving to the right and I started flashing my headlights. The ignorant driver hit the snake on purpos!!! Although i would not do this I went ahead and gave him a few hand gesters and went on my way... Why do people have to do stuff light this?

it's all relative...

last year someone killed a duck at a local urban lake, and the cops could not for some reason get him for animal cruelty, so they charged him with taking migratory birds w/o a permit( federal offense)!!!

i'll bet if someone purposely swerved a car to kill an elk, or a bald eagle, and it was witnessed by a game and fish employee, there would be something done about it, but we know with snakes that is never going to happen.

i often encounter this attitude on hotline calls, and use the same analogy with the caller... it's against the law for you to kill that snake in your yard...just as it would be if an elk or eagle in was in your yard and you shot it........EVERYONES reaction to that one is total disbelief!!

Oh, man, PJ, that really sux! I would hate to see that happen, and I would have been giving them some pretty wild hand gestures as well.

Some people out there don't see snakes as creatures that can and do feel pain, they only know the illogical fear that has been instilled, or they are the type to get an insane thrill out of killing something - without worrying about getting cited for animal cruelty.

Though, if an elk ran out into the highway and was hit by a car, truck, or semi, the driver wouldn't get cited for illegal take of a game animal. Then, in the case of the poor snake in the road, it wouldn't be illegal take, it would be viewed as "an unfortunate accident" and left at that.

Now, someone killing a snake in their yard like Mark said, is not legal without a hunting license, and they should either have a hunting license, get someone to remove it without killing it (The AHA) or they need to move back to the center of town where they won't find any "dangerous" snakes like Rattlesnakes. (Or move out of Arizona. UhhBuhBye, now, BuhBye.)

Our critters: 12 snakes, 4 dart frogs, 6 lizards, 3 tanks of fish, 2 ratz, 1 toad, & 1 box turtle.
Looking for smaller native herps for education events (ground snakes or a young chuckwalla would be wonderful...)

It was nice seeing you out there. Congratulations on getting that huge atrox to safety. It was one of the largest that I have seen from that area.

Now join the AHA

While that road is by no means top secret it is best to be vague in your posts. These are public forums and you never know who is reading them. Plus you don't want your herping spot overcrowded.

Trust me buddy, I'm learning as I go, too.

I am sure you could cruise down south and pick up some willardi or lepidus...it is that time of year, after all...
