Did anybody else (Cable, maybe?) catch the error in Reptiles Magazine, Aug 2005 issue? On page 22, a page labeled Bits and Pieces, there is a bit at the bottom referring to last months (July, '05) Photo Quiz. The lizard shown is certainly a horned lizard but it is a Desert Horned Lizard, Phrynosoma platyrhinos ssp. , not the Texas HL, P. cornutum.
Marty also detected quite a number of other errors throughout portions of the magazine. And people pay for this??

A few years ago they did a herp article on pyros and said that in Arizona you had to have a "Special Permit" to have one LOL
Of course I wrote them, and of course, I never heard back from them.

I didn't see it but am not surprised. I see a lot of errant information on horned lizards. I always find it amusing when a website or article describes "Horned lizards," their habitat and food preferences as though they are all the same. There is some similarity but they are a varied species and have many different habitat and food requirements.
The "special permits" thing I have heard before. This is usually form a well meaning ecologist trying to obscure the ownership requirements for a given species. Not that this is necessarily bad, just a little weird to me.
It never occurred to me that a hunting or fishing license could be classified as a special permit.

there are many people from our club and this website closely associated with the magazine. Bill Love who frequently posts on this site (and I believe is a member) is a regular columnist, and his photos appear throughout the magazine, Bob Gaulden (aha member) has an article in there 4-5 times a year, this month an article talked about former education coordinator John Slones work with midget fade and hopi rattlesnakes, last month an article about Randy Babb and friends searching for frogs in the monsoon. I don't think it is intended as a scientific publication, and errors do occur in all popular mags......I enjoy reading it myself.

ever been a member of AHA. Bob Gaulden, after being a member for many years, allowed his membership to lapse and was given a membership due to his excellent talk on Rattlers. Dick Bartlett miswrote when he wrote of John Slone's "research" on Hopis and Midget Fadeds. The picture of the Hopi in Reptiles was taken in my backyard "studio" when Dick visited here last year. I have no idea how he got information on John's nonexistent research on Hopis and Midget Fadeds.
And, if the people publishing Reptiles can't tell the difference between a Texas HL and a Desert, I wonder what else they have screwed up. Oh, but I bet they can identify all the morphs of Cornsnakes.
And so should a lot of other forum members :).
Jerry: I was going to make a comment about knowing the difference between a Night Snake and a juvi WDB but you can't see the smile in forums without one of these :) Everyone makes a mistake once in a while :) Sometimes there are mistakes and not necessarily ignorance at the heart of an error.

but Reptiles holds itself up as a paragon of the herp hobby.
"Sometimes there are mistakes and not necessarily ignorance at the heart of an error."
The original picture was published in July. Are you telling me that all the people who wrote in made the same error? In the words of the immortal Manuel Labor, "I don't theen so." :(
Cmon Jerry people make mistakes, remember the albino gopher from the hotline that turned into a albino corn? :D All of us make mistakes from time o time.

I understand what your saying but overall its a good magazine with nice care articles on reptiles/amphibians.
I used to love the Reptile hobby magazine but that went out of bussiness.

In the pre internet days...........Vivarium, Reptiles, Rep hobbiest and Reptile and Amphibian magazine were the mags.
Vivarium was a cut above the rest then Fauna introduced itself.
Vivarium then joined with Reptiles magazine as a joint venture.
Now......many posters are delivering magazine quality photo's and info on any species can be found at the drop of a hat......or click of the mouse.
I'm sure all the mags are under pressure and only one or two still remain.
LOL.....I stilll have the #1 issue of Reptiles with the iggy on the cover.
I liked Vivarium magazine and fauna was a nice one as well.
No need for 'em these days. I like creating my own adventure!
