Does anyone amongst you knowledgeable people know whether there are going to be any vendors offering Western Box Turtles (terrapene ornata luteola)? :Think
zebeck
08-11-2004, 07:09 PM
Well, i'm not really knowledgeable about the show and so i couldn't say but I'm pretty sure it would be a clear violation of thr law to sell a desert box turtle in Arizona.
Am I wrong?
Barjatiya
08-11-2004, 08:02 PM
I thought the Terrapene ornata luteola's range only went as far as western Texas? :Think I'll be most happy to be educated by anyone on the subject ... actually, I'd appreciate it! :D So have at it!
Donna
08-11-2004, 09:06 PM
Well, Arizona does have Terrapene ornata. Their range is in the south eastern corner of the state, though I'm not certain on specific subspecies and I kinda figure it doesn't matter which subspecies seeing that the law tends to concentrate on species only, however New Mexico has Terrapene ornata luteola's so that kills your theory on them not occuring west of Texas.

, thanks for the info. Indeed, you're right, in that case it wouldn't matter, whether or not a subspecies was involved in a sale or not, or whether the turtle came from Texas or New Mexico or not. Live and learn! Or as my old school teacher would say: let no day pass without having learned something new. Thanks again!
zebeck
08-12-2004, 04:39 PM
There are of course no wild Terrapene ornata ornata in AZ but there are plenty of T o luteola. People see them pretty often and the range seems to include at least three of the sourthen counties.
If you want to adopt one try here:
http://www.desertmuseum.org/programs/tap_boxturtle.html (box turtle at ASDM) http://www.desertmuseum.org/programs/tap_boxturtle.html
For what its worth they include a caresheet but I think their feeding suggestions leave something to be desired.

I know AHA, Tucson Herp Soc and AZG&F will be there. I have not heard about other Non-profits except some of the vendors who don't mean to be non-profit but are. LOL. Any word on that?? :Think

I like to go the first day to get the "pick of the litter" and the second day to get good deals :)
Early saturday in Daytona (yes, we survived Charley) I got the cutest animals and on sunday I got the best deal on animals and supplies that the breeders/sellers did not want to haul back home :)
We just came back from Daytona but I am still hoping to check out Tucson, will be a first time for us.

Well, we figured the finances, the unexpected bill that came in, and now it looks like we may miss going to the Tucson show, not to mention getting a new reptile. Such is life. I know we will make it there next year, and I am looking forward to the AHA show this fall, once word hits on where and when.
The new apartment manager doesn't mind any of our snakes (as long as they don't escape) so we are pretty free to get as many as we can fit. ;) I love it. I asked just before we signed a new lease...

We had to change our plans too due to my husband working this weekend :( :(
I am *so glad* we got to go to Daytona at least!
I still needed some supplies, this would have been a perfect time to get them without having to worry about air line rules.
Have fun!
