View Full Version : chucks
I am starting to build an outdoor enclosure for some desert reptiles and would like to add a chuck to it, is it legal to catch these awesoem lizards and keep them? also, where is a good area to start looking for them?

Get a hunting license and read the regs. I think it's like 4 a year. I know Mtn. Kings are 2 a year and banded geckos are 20 a year. I see chucks a lot, but they're hard to get close to, even for pictures.

I thought that bandeds were 20 a day. I'm glad that i found that out now.Does anyone know if you can take chucks from camelback? If so that is a great place to find chucks and get very close.

Aaron, I believe Camelback is in the city park system, and therefore closed to collecting. But don't quote me, check the regs... :)

I can't seem to find anywhere listing it as part of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve system however it has been a Preserve since 1968 and that should pretty much put it off limits for hunting of any sorts.

"I think it's like 4 a year. I know Mtn. Kings are 2 a year and banded geckos are 20 a year."
The part you are forgetting is "or in possession." Therefore, if AZGF ever enforced the regs, if you have 4 chucks, you cannot go out next year and get four more. The Banded Geckos are under the "20-a day" rule which includes a number of other small lizards and snakes. Again, it is "live or in possession." Therefore, if you have 20 in the freezer for your Nightsnake, you can't go out and get 20 more the next night.

When I was mountain biking on South Mountain, National Trail, I jumped off my bike and caught a Chuck. Awesome animals! I don't know if you are allowed to take them from South Mountain or not, but if you go out a few miles on National Trail there are loads of them! Good luck. When you are finished with your enclosure, post a pic, i'd love to see it. Also, if you do your homework you can find out the different color variations with different locations. I have seen some with yellow tails, like the ones at the Phx zoo, or on South Mountain they have orange tails. Very cool!

They are protected at South Mountain. They can be pretty much found in any rocky desert areas. Getting them to come out of cracks is the hard part. Good Luck.
