I was reading one of my many snake books today and read a little bit about the anaconda. there were a few things in the book that made me question its credibility. I am not going to reveal the name of the book, but tell me what you think about this statement.
"Anacondas don't have fangs or teeth". Now, i know they don't have fangs, but i always thought that they had teeth like your boas and pythons. I am interested in hearing from people who have experience with them, or better yet have been bitten by one:D

The book is in fact not stating any truth in that matter. Anacondas still seem to be one snake that gets its own fair share of myths and half-truths passed along about it quite often.

Truth be known, anacondas do have relatively sharp teeth, just about like any other snake out there. I would assume it be very hard for them to capture and subdue such prey as caiman and capybara without them. I have a hard time reading any books that are readily available on reptiles these days, especially ones sold in pet stores and everyday book stores. I have no idea where the one you have quoted here was acquired, but seems a bit odd they would state that they have no teeth...lol.

of the book. That way none of us will buy it and we can all laugh at you for having bought it. LOL!

Oh, BTW, was that the Green Anaconda or the Yellow that was toothless?

.. I have been donated books when I took on reptiles from other folks. Many of them I have tossed by this time, but still most books had this sort of information in them. One iguana book in particular mentioned the feeding of inverts, from crickets to mealworms as part of a steady diet. It had also been rewritten by a guy form a book on other lizards from way back in 1927 or some crap, but just reworded for iguanas. A very bad rewrite indeed. I have seen books from care on boa constrictors to geckos with just some of the oddest and strangest care and facts that I have seen anywhere.

Anyhoo, got to go now, as I am writing a book on the dental care for walrus, sperm whales and sea lions. I'll give everyone a 25% discount who is a member of the AHA!:)

trust me, anacondas have teeth. I bought a wild caught anaconda way back in the old days. When I took it out of the shipping bag it proceded to literally bite me all about the head and shoulders. He was only eight feet but damn did that hurt. There was also blood on the outside of the shipping container when it arrived and it wasn't the snakes! Thank God for captive bred!:D

That is what I originally thought. the book is a new release that i received as a gift for christmas. Jeff Corwins new book was bought for me and i am starting that now, but the book with the toothless anaconda was an add on from ebay. It features jeff corwin and it is titled Snakes "Face to Face". Unfortunately this is a childrens book with some good information, but with "facts" like the anacondas teeth really makes me judge its credibility. the worst is that these type of books are starting myths with our younger readers who will be quoting misconception; and by the way Jerry, it didn't specify yellow or green, just said anaconda. thanks for the replies guys, see you at the next meeting

Anacondas DO NOT have teeth. Mine has razor blades in his mouth. It doesnt really bite it grabs and slices, and she shakes her head from side to side.

Leave it to you Jerry to point out the screw ups-LOL. I actually do have a very rare snake, as far as i know the only one in captivity that can breed with itself. How about i bring it over for you to probe, of course with bare hands, no tube, no bagging HER head! Actually he really is a she.

Brandi my arm doesn't quite fit in her mouth yet. SHE is about 2 years old, and not even 2' and she eats 4-5 mice weekly. Im hoping its a dwarf, or heck maybe its loaded with parasites? but being captive born, and the big present it leaves about a week after a meal i doubt it. Next present it leaves me im going to take it to the vet, and have it put under the microscope.

did anybody else get to see the great special on channel 58 on the anacondas of Equador? it was a really good documentary and the mentioned the razor sharp, facing backward like the pythons and boas, teeth of the anaconda. there goes the credibility of that childrens book. what a shame. thanks a lot guys.

Is the photo in an album on a yahoo group? If so, the problem might be that the group is only accessable to members.

If you can email it to me psitacus@cox.net I can put it somewhere else and post it if ya need.
