Sorry to post a DOR lizard but I am unaware of what species of lizard this is. It was at least 13 inches long about the size a small chuckwalla. I know, I know I need to pick up a field guide lol.

Brendan thanks for the advice, I will let you know how it goes.

Looks like a Sceloporus jarrovi (Spiny Lizard), but cannot tell for sure.
Anyone else...

if you would post a locality so certain species could be eliminated. You don't say that the specimen came from the SE AZ sky islands yet herpcharmer immediately assumed it was S. jarrovii. There are two other good sized sceloporines in this state but, if it is actually 13" OA, I believe it can be only one sp and that is S. magister, the Desert Spiny Lizard. BTW, if you do plan to get a field guide, consider the new Stebbins. The Audubon has nice pics but even John Behler, the editor, admits that the field guide is outdated and needs revision.
Remember the saying;"Location, location, location!"

The location was the Superstition Mountain Range. When I say it was approximately 13 inches I am including the tail. I don't know if one readily measures the length of a lizard from the tip of the nose to the end of the tail. Have you heard about a revision anytime soon for the Field Guide?

I believe it's a Desert Spiny Lizard (Sceloporus Magister). From my experience they are VERY common. Stebbin's max size is 5 3/5in. head to vent.

The new Stebbins Field Guide to Western Reptiles and Amphibians just came out this year. I don't foresee the Audubon being revised in the near future. Get a Stebbins. They are available almost everywhere but you will probably get the best price online. Check Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble or Borders Books.
