The AHA has been invited to the "Harry Potter Magical Midnight Party" where the theme is Magical Creatures. She said "I was hoping to not only make this event fun for the kids, but also hopefully educational. Many reptiles are surrendered or misunderstood. I was hoping there was someone locally possibly from your organization who would like to come and do an informational talk about reptiles and perhaps bring a few reptiles along as your own 'magical creatures'. "
Education at it's most exciting and random usually occurs at bookstores, which I do on a whim quite often (ambush education). Anyone that wants to join the fun can PM me, e-mail me at katsnake@gmail.com or call me after 5PM on weekdays or after 10AM on weekends at 480-703-8907. Let me know what you can bring. Bear in mind, other than the display cages for the native herps, most critters will be "hangin out" either being held or walked on a leash if it's willing. My dragons will be on leashes, my Black Pinesnake won't. :nea:
The specifics:
July 20th, 2007 - On a Friday night. :dance3: (corrected-had 21st.)
Bookstar at the Scottsdale Pavillions
8919 E Indian Bend in Scottsdale
Starting around 7 PM, and ending when the last HP book sells, usually around 12:30 or so. :applause:
Herps: Both Native and Non-native. :dance3:
Costumes encouraged but not necessary. :applause:

I am still getting manager approval to bring a couple of hots, and we need to make sure that if we do bring them, they are transported safely and preferably in the locked cages before it gets busy with people. As for Non-venomous creatures, they do not need to be carried in containers, just be mindful of the herp's attitude toward being approached by strangers. Also be mindful of people with phobias and avoid approaching them. Some phobic people will eventually approach you, which is awesome. Take these encounters slowly, let them do the work. The store is expecting basically the same as what I do at Bookmans, just walk around with the animals.

Note the FAKE snake the one gentleman was wearing around his neck..... apparently he just thought it looked cool, but wasn't too keen on real live snakes... LOL He got over his mild phobia...
You want to bring a Redtail boa? (or some other kind of large snake?)

Jerry, that would probably be a "no", or every member of the AHA would show up with two of their friends and say they were also members... that would sure tank their profit for the month. LOL

If I can come I'll probably bring a retic around 8 or so feet. She's the only one calm enough to stay with me that long & not try to get away.

News just in: "If there are any members of your group that are plannning on getting a copy of the new book, you can email me their name and phone number or email address as well as the number of copies they would like and I will reserve them at the store so they have a guarenteed copy." So, Brandon? Andrzej? Hellboy? Anyone else?
Plus she got the clearance for me to bring some Hots (buzztails and Gila) for the display cages, so Jerry, I will be calling you unless you are going to be there to pick up a reserved copy? I know the two of you are prolific readers.

The last one was listed at $29.99, so it would be close to that, most likely.... But that is nothing more than an educated guess. :Nana

I'll be there around 9, 5.5 hrs is a bit much for me & my Baby.
She's almost 9' now & around 20#, a true testiment to the growth rate of a reticulated python, about a foot & 5#s in just under a month!

It was pretty cool, lots of people & lots of interest in the herps. My snake helped one guy dressed as Valdemort(sp?) win 3rd in the costume contest & she evacuated like a gallon on me & the floor. Forgot my cam so look for Kat's pics to go up.

There are 40 pics from the party, the first 20 are uploaded the second 20 are going in as I type.
They can all be seen at http://s27.photobucket.com/albums/c198/katsnake/AHA/
The man playing Hagrid is a co-worker of Blakrain's that I asked to come to play the part, he had so much fun, and loved seeing all the creatures. For a while Chris & Courtney's FL Kingsnake was entangled in his wig hair. It was funny.

I just got an e-mail message from the Harry Potter party coordinator:
Hey Kat,
I wanted to say THANK YOU to you and ALL the wonderful critters and people you brought. I hope that you guys had a great time and sorry that I didn't get to say goodnight (I hope one of our managers thanked you). It was an absolute delight to have you guys there and I hope you made great contacts with other pro-reptile people or at least educated a few minds. Scott was wonderful.
Thank you again!
Claire
